Port Hueneme Living: Videos, Map and Guide

Is Port Hueneme a Good Place to Live?

No matter where you live in this slow paced, 5 mile wide city, you're going to be just minutes from the beach and far from major highways.

Port Hueneme has a naval base, an international port and the most affordable coastal real estate in southern California.

Local complaints include homelessness and lack of a vibrant downtown.

Ocean and Beach Access

Port Hueneme Beach Park

Hueneme Beach Park is the pride of Port Hueneme and the main gathering point for locals. This 50-acre park offers sand volleyball, picnic tables, barbecue pits and a beachside restaurant and snack bar.

Ormond Beach Park just to the south has a desolate feel with no development and is a bird sanctuary and nesting grounds as well. It has also been a major focal point for community involvement with cleanup and preserving this beautiful preserve.

    Map Location

Port Hueneme is located on the southern border of Oxnard (marked with the red dot and black arrow on the bottom of the map).

Since it is so far from highway 101 and off the beaten path, there is not much traffic.

You can drive from Port Hueneme to Oxnard in just minutes, to Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains within 30 minutes and to Santa Monica in about an hour.

This is a popular small city for people working at the nearby naval bases (in Port Hueneme and Point Mugu), in agriculture as well as the International harbor (which is the only deep water port in between Los Angeles and San Francisco).

    What Makes Port Hueneme Special?

Port Hueneme provides some of the most affordable real estate in Ventura County. Since it is only 5 miles wide, everyone who lives here is just minutes from the beach!

The coastline, beach and fishing pier are a stunningly beautiful western boundary.

The presence of the Naval Base, port and agriculture provide a steady economic base, which could be a real plus as well if you are considering buying a rental property here.

What Do Residents Like the Least?

Some residents have concerns about air quality and fumes from the wastewater treatment plant and shipping harbor.

Also, there is a lack of a vibrant downtown area and homelessness near the shopping centers.

It is one of the coldest spots in Ventura County in the Winter.

It can feel windy, damp and colder with daytime temperature in the 50's to 60's.

Your videos are really helpful. My husband and I are considering retiring in the next few years and thinking about Port Hueneme. We currently live in San Jose and want to move closer to our children in L.A. We’re not familiar with the area and would love to tour and decide if that’s the city for us.
